The largest pond has been drained for fishing. The fresh mudflat suggested to be a good feeding area for stop-over shorebirds. The reality was different. Only a few birds were seen. In the next couple of weeks other lakes are going to be drew./A legnagyobb 2-es tó csapolás alatt áll. A friss iszapfelület jó táplálkozóterületet sejtet a megálló partimadarak számára. The last full day of the bird ringing camp was an impresive day from birding point of view. I was hesitating wether to stay whole day on the hide to watch birds under flaming sun but finally it was worth to be insistent./A tábor utolsó teljes napja nagyon látványos volt madártani szempontból. Today we were birding in the afternoon and checked two ponds holding the majority of birds. The pond #4 is under filling-up and some part of the the grown vegetation is already under water./Ma délután két olyan tavat néztünk meg, melyek a madarak többségét adják a területen. We woke up early with a hope to have a nice birding day based on the weather forecast. They were wrong! The morning rain blocked us to look around. In the afternoon there was some nice birds recorded./Az időjárás előrejelzés alapján, abban a reményben keltünk korán, hogy egy jót madarászhatunk. Tévedtek! A reggeli esők megakadályoztak abban, hogy körbejárjuk a jobb élőhelyeket. Délután azért láttunk néhány érdekesebb fajt. Eurasian Spoonbill/Kanalasgém 41 (They arrived in the evening and obviously looked for a roosting place. A part of them left the area just before dusk./Este érkeztek a tóra nyugat felől és nyílvánvalóan éjszakázóhelyet kerestek. Egy nagyobb csapatuk még sötétedés előtt elhagyta a tavakat.) It was an incredible day from both ringing and birding point of view. In the morning amazing and unusual number of birds trapped in quite nice species diversity. Total number of birds ringed is about 400 by the end of the day. Among the many interesting bird we can underline Barred and Wood Warblers, Wrynecks while the most numerous species was the Blackcap and Sedge Warbler./Mind a gyűrűzés, mind pedig a megfigyelések szempontjából nagyszerű nap volt a mai. Reggel szokatlan mennyiségű madarat fogtunk nagyon szép fajgazdagságban. A gyűrűzött madarak összmennyisége 400 körül van a nap végén. Az érdekesebb gyűrűzött fajok között vannak a karvalyposzáták, sisegő füzikék illetve a nyaktekercsek, míg a legtöbbet a barátkából és a foltos nádiposzátából gyűrűztünk. Today interesting sightings: Black Stork/Fekete gólya 2 White Stork/Fehér gólya 1 Ferruginosus Duck/Cigányréce 3 Eurasian Honey-Buzzard/Darázsölyv 1 (all seen by others except BS/a fekete gólya kivételével valamennyit msáok látták) Eurasian Hobby/Kabasólyom 1 Thrush Nightingale/Nagy fülemüle 1 Radde's Warbler/Vastagcsőrű füzike 1 (ad.) (The bird was alerted at about 4:45 pm by Péter Csonka. The bird has slowly been moving on the ground or close to it very nearby our ringing camp. As the ID was not 100% in the beginning more of us tried to find it. I also arrived very soon and tried to play its call from the car. This wasn't really helpful. Then as others approached to it suddenly moved towards us providing some excellent views to be able to see its features for positive ID. Unfortunately there was no chance to take a few shot as it was too fast moving. The prominent eyebrowe extended behind the eye, the dark brown (soil brown) upperparts, the yellowish legs, the well visible and obvious yellowish undertail-covers, short bill and its behavior made us sure to identify it as a Radde's Warbler./A madarat Csonka Peti jelezte 16:45 körül. A madár lassan mozgott a talajon, vagy az aljnövényzetben, a gyűrűző táborunk mellett. Mivel eleinte a határozás nem volt 100%-os, ezért többen bekapcsolódtak a visszakeresésébe. Miután megérkeztem megpróbáltuk hanggal elcsalni, melyre nem reagált. Néhányan megközelítették a helyet, ahol utoljára látták és akkor kirepült felénk, ahol kitűnően láthattuk ahhoz, hogy pozitívan határozhassuk. Sajnos fotózási kísérletem nem járt sikerrel. A feltűnő szemsáv, mely a szem mögé ért, a földbarna felsőtest, a sárgás lábak és a feltűnő és jól látható sárgás alsó farokfedők biztossá tettek bennünket abban, hogy vastagcsőrű füzikét láttunk.) ______ Please don't hesitate to share your thoughts, feelings and comments on my blog or its content. We had a lovely weather with a hot peak around 31°C. This somehow also reflected in the number of birds ringed. All in all 205 birds were trapped. From birding point of view it was also a productive day./Nagyon szép időnk volt ma 31°C-os maximummal. Ez a gyűrűzött madarak mennyiségére is rányomta a bélyegét. Összesen 205 madarat fogtunk. Terepi megfigyelések szempontjából is nagyon produktív volt a mai nap. Highlights: White Stork/Fehér gólya 3 Black Stork/Fekete gólya 4 Booted Eagle/Törpesas 2 (2 dark morps arrived from the Gerecse mountain in the late evenings and slowly dissappeared towards the Slovakian areas allowing nice time for identification over the telescope also by others./2 sötét változatú madár érkezett este a Gerecse felől, majd Szlovákia irányábaeltermikeltek. Teleszkópon keresztül lehetőség volt a pozitív határozásra mások által is.) Saker Falcon/Kerecsensólyom 1 Eurasian Hobby/Kabasólyom 2 (Amazing hunting behavior was witnessed over a House Martin. Today was a kind of recovery for the birds and the campers. This was also the birthday of my son, Dani. Happy Birthday Dani! He is 12 now. From birding point of view only a few interesting records should be mentioned. I have never seen such a long and heavy downpour as today's in Hungary. I felt like I was somewhere in Asia in the monsoon! The only new bird of note today was a dark morph European Honey-Buzzard. The highlight was however a Death's Head Hawkmoth (Acherontia atropos), which was safely removed from one of the mistnets! This amazing-looking moth was then kept in the dry of the camp. When handled it made a strange squeaky noise - it is the only moth that can do this, by forcing air down its proboscis. Here are some photos of this rarity: Magyaroszágon jómagam sosem láttam ennyire sokáig tartó heves esőzést. Időnként úgy éreztem, hogy valahol Ázsiában vagyok a monszun ideje alatt. Ez nagyjából elmond mindent a madarak aktivitásáról. Az egyetlen érdekesebb faj egy sötét változatú darázsölyv volt délután. A reggeli órákban az egyik hálóból egy halálfejes lepkét (Acherontia atropos) mentettek ki sikeresen. Ezt a hihetetlen külsejű lepkét száraz körülmények között tartottuk a táborban. Miközben fotóztuk hallatta jellegzetes cincogó hangját. Néhány fotót is találhatsz erről a ritka fajról.

After a two hours long heavy rain during the night the daytime was quite good with some sun. Temperature droped to 18°C in the morning time and was humid at around midday. Today highlights and the shorebirds: Pygmy Cormorant 1 Purple Heron 7 Great Egret ~60 Little Egret 10 Black-crowned Night-Heron 60 Eurasian Spoonbill 1 Black Stork 44 (3 larger group recorded during the day) White Stork 5 Greylag Goose 600 Eurasian Hobby 1 Eurasian Oytercatcher 2 (seen by others) Little Ringed Plover 4 Spotted Redshank 10 Common Greenshank 3 Wood Sandpiper 20 Green Sandpiper 9 Common Sandpiper 7 Dunlin 6 Little Stint 2 --- Az éjszakai két órás heves esőzések után napközben meglehetősen jó idő volt, némi napsütéssel. A reggeli órákban a hőmérséklet 18°C körül volt, de dél körül már meleg és igen párás volt. We had a quite bad weather with heavy rainfall in the morning time and some sun in the afternoon. This somehow reflected in the bird numbers both for observed and ringed birds. Today higlights: Purple Heron 1 Black Stork 37 (started to find termics hours after rain stoped) European Honey-Buzzard 1 Osprey 1 Eurasian Kestrel Thrush Nightingale 1 (ringed) --- Ma meglehetősen rossz idő volt délelőtt (heves esőkkel), de délutánra már kisütött a nap. Ez rányomta a bélyegét mind a látott, mind pedig a fogott madarak menyiségére. Mai legfontosabbak: Vörös gém 1 Fekete gólya 37 (délután keztek termikelni, miután az eső elállt) Darázsölyv 1 Halászsas 1 Vörös vércse 2 Nagy fülemüle 1 (gyűrűzve)

This morning was extremely hot with well over 30°C but a heavy and long lasting thunderstorm hit us in the afternoon. The icy shower cooled the temperature by 10°C in the afternoon. The number of ringed birds was less than a day before. Today highlights: Black Stork 49 (All the birds were spending the night in the nearby forest and started to use termics in the morning time when the temperature rose rapidly. It was an incredible view to see all the birds hovering over us.) White Stork 2 (joined to the Black Stork's flock) Purple Heron 4 Eurasian Kestrel 1 Eurasian Hobby 1 Eurasian Oystercatcher 1 (juv.) Northern Lapwing 15 Little Ringed Plover 2 Common Sandpiper 3 Wood Sandpiper 30 Spotted Redshank 4 Common Redshank 2 Common Greenshank 4 Dunlin 6 --- A mai délelőtt rendkívül meleg volt jóval túl a 30°C, de délután egy komolyabb vihar zúdúlt a Ferencmajorra. A jeges felhőszakadás nyomán a hőmérséklet 10°C fokkal csökkent délutánra. A fogott madarak száma alacsonyabb volt, mint egy nappal korábban. Legfontosabbak: Fekete gólya 49 (Valamennyi madár az Által-ér-menti erdökben éjszakázott, majd a hőmérséklet emelkedésével termikeltek fel. Rendkívüli látvány volt, ahogy a fejünk felett húztak el a tavak felé.) Fehér gólya 2 (a fekete gólya csapathoz csatlakozott) Vörös gém 4 Vörös vércse 1 Kabasólyom 1 Csigaforgató 1 (juv.) From birding point of view it was and eventful and exciting day... Today highlights: Red-necked Grebe 1 (adult) Purple Heron 1 Eurasian Spoonbill 1 Black Stork 18 White Stork 1 European Honey-Buzzard 1 Osprey 1 White-tailed Eagle 2 Eurasian Hobby 2 (early morning one of them was successfully hunting on a young Barn Swallow) Ferruginosus Pochard 1 male Eurasian Oystercatcher 1 Green Sandpiper 9 Barred Warbler 1 European Starling ~22.000 --- A forróság visszatért a környékünkre 31ºC-os csúccsal a mai napon. Délutánra a Gerecse lábainál zivatarok tanui voltunk, de elkerült minket. Madártani oldalról eléggé mozgalmas és izgalmas napot zártunk... Today highlights: Red-necked Grebe (in the morning seen by Gellért Bátky) Purple Heron 2 Eurasian Spoonbill 3 European Honey-Buzzard 1 Eurasian Hobby 2 (after several unsuccessful attacks on swallows they started to hunt on little sized bats. Within 5 miutes 3 small bats were caught by one of them. I was watching it via my scope. The bird was eating them in the air while gliding) Whimbrel 1 Eurasian Curlew 1 Common Swift 2 --- Mai legjobbak: Vörösnyakú vöcsök (reggel a 11-esen látta Bártky Gellért) Vörös gém 2 Kanalasgém 3 Darázsölyv 1 Kabasólyom 2 (néhány sikertelen fecsékre vágás után stratégiát váltottak és nagyon apró termetű denevéreket kezdtek fogdosni a szürkületben. Az egyik madarat teleszkóppal figyeltem. 5 perc alatt 3 denevért fogott el, melyeket siklás közben el is fogyasztott a levegőben.) Kis póling 1 Nagy póling 1 Sarlósfecske 2

Today we built up our annual birdwatching and ringing camp which will last till the end of August. Here I will share with you the most interesting recordings (for the site) made by the participants. In the afternoon I saw a Whimbrel calling all the time while looked for a resting place. From the birdhide of the camp a Purple Heron and 74 Great Crested Grebe were seen. During some maintenance work we saw an European Honey-Buzzard nearby the main road of the lakes and also 17 Black Storks slowly moving to the East. In the evening 30.000 European Starlings and 800 Barn Swallows arrived for night roosting. --- Ma nappal felépítettük a szokásos évi madáarász és madárgyűrűző táborunkat a halastavaknál, ami augusztus végéig tart. Blogomban megosztom a legérdekesebb megfigyeléseket, melyeket a tábor lakói vagy csak én láttam. Délután egy kis pólingot láttunk a tavak fölött körözni. Láthatóan pihenőhelyet keresett magának. A tábori lesről több faj között láttunk egy vörös gémet és 74 búbos vöcsköt. A táborral kapcsolatos munkák során egy darázsölyvet is láttunk, illetve 17 (vonuló) fekete gólyát, melyek lassan kelet felé vonultak. A esti behúzásra 30.000 seregély és kb. 800 főként füstiu fecskéből álló fecskecsapat gyülekezett a 13-as tó fölött.
