27.05.2007 - Ferencmajor fishponds, NW Hungary

Went out with Szandra to the fishponds. The drained pond was quiet. We are just before a cold spell so maybe the situation will change a bit. Already 8 Pied Avocets and one Black-winged Stilt having full clutches. Shorebirds counted as follows: Pied Avocet 36 Black-winged Stilt 12 Northern Lapwing 158 Grey Plover 1 Little Ringed Plover 28 Common Ringed Plover 8 Common Redshank 26 Ruff and Reeve 5 Dunlin 1 Curlew Sandpiper 2 Little Stint 38 Black Tern 6 After leaving the ponds we headed to check another place for breeding Little Ringed Plovers. It was on one of the islands of the River Danube. We found a new nest with four eggs with the male nearby. We also visited an area in the Gerecse mountain where Imperial Eagle is breeding. One bird, most probably the male, was seen flying over the territory while one or two chicks were seen in the nest. Many European Bee-eater were around the area. -------------- Ma a Ferencmajori-halastavakat néztük meg Szandrával. A lecsapolt tó elég csendes volt. Egy hidegfront előtt vagyunk, így a helyzet néhány napon belül változhat. Már 8 gulipán és egy gólyatöcs fészakalj teljes a kis zátonyokon. A számolt partimadár-mennyiségek: Gulipán 36 Gólyatöcs 12 Bíbic 158 Ezüstlile 1 Kis lile 28 Parti lile 8 Piroslábú cankó 26 Pajzsoscankó 5 Havasi partfutó 1 Sarlós partfutó 2 Apró partfutó 38 Kormos szerkő 6 Miután elmentünk a tavaktól egy dunai szigeten levő kis lile fészkelőhelyet néztünk meg, ahol Szandra talált is egy friss, 4 tojásos fészekaljat. Innen a Észak-Gerecsén keresztül mentünk haza, majd megnéztük a parlagi sas fészkelőhelyét. Egy madár, valószínűleg a hím, a területe fölött keringett, míg a fészekben láttuk a fiókákat is. Ugyanitt sok gyurgyalag (30+) táplálkozott.

26.05.2007 - Hortobágy National Park

It has been a very nice day! A bit tiresome as we departed at 3AM without any sleepin but we wanter to avoid travel in extreme hot weather. The target was to find some birds for Szandra she had neved ever seen before. Finally collected a few for her country and life list. We visited the Hortobágy National Park in the morning and late evening time skipped the hottest times of the day. It was amazing to see how dry year we already have. The grasslands or as we cal it "puszta" is already shoving the characteristics of an August puszta. Dried grass colored the landscape by faded orange. No water on the grasslands since weeks. On some part we had a feeling as we were somewhere in a semi-desert. Birds were typical for the region and nothing extreme was found although we so much expected to find some Rose-colored Starlings as several flocks were reported in the previous days countrywide. We could not find any and only one flock reported from yesterday a bit far from the Hortobágy region. The unclomplete birdlist from our trip (the interesting ones): Squacco Heron Purple Heron Ferruginosus Duck 3 European Honey-Buzzard 2 White-tailed Eagle 1 Red-footed Falcon 100+ Europen Kestrel 1 Eurasian Thick-knee 2 Little Owl 2 European Bee-eater 4 European Roller 5 Lesser Grey Shrike 10+ On the way back heavy thunderstorms crossed the Hortobágy and also the highway.

Today I got a so called magic material as an injection to block the symptom of my pollen allergy. I hope it will be effective and I can continue my job in the field. On the way back home I checked the the drained pond again. The weather is again extremely hot with 31ºC in shadow. The breeding of shorebirds is improving as a new species, the Black-winged Stilt started to incubate on one of the little muddy islands. More Stilts are here so more cluthes could be produced in the coming days. Remélem hatásos lesz és tudom folytatni a munkát a terepen is. Hazafelé jövet benéztem a lecsapolt tóhoz. Ma is rendkívül meleg van, 31ºC árnyékban. A fészkelő partimadár közösség egy újabb fajjal bővült a mai napon. Egy látszólag kotló tojó gólyatöcsöt láttam az egyik szigeten, ahol a gulipánok is ülnek. Több töcs is volt ma a tavon, így várhatók újabb fészkelések is. Pectoral Sandpiper recorded

Today another nice rare bird alert sent from our region by Peter Csonka. He visited the ponds at around midday and found a summer plumaged Pectoral Sandpiper on the drained pond. I could go there a bit later but finally I found the bird while feeding on the mudflat. In 1993 I found 3 birds together on another pond within the Ferencmajor fishponds. The situation was not much different from yesterday. I share you the changes only: Black Stork 1 Pied Avocet 14 (on two little island 7 birds were sitting on the mud for most probably incubating) Common Greenshank 1 Sanderling 1 ad full breeding plumage Little Stint 12 Curlew Sandpiper 1 Thanks Peter for the info. •••••• Ma egy újabb ritkaságról kaptam hírt, mely szintén a mi területünkről származik. Csonka Péter egy nyári ruhás vándorpartfutót talált az egyik lecsapolt tavon. Körülbelül 40 perc múlva értem a tóhoz és sikerült megtalálnom a táplálkozó madarat. 1993-ban ugyanitt a Ferencmajorban 3 madarat találtam. A tegnapi naphoz képest nem sok minden változott a 4-es tavon! Ezúttal csak a változásokat közlöm: Fekete gólya 1 Gulipán 14 (két kisebb szigeten 7 madár ült) Szürke cankó 1 Fenyérfutó 1 nászruhás Apró partfutó 12 Sarlós partfutó 1 Köszönöm Petinek az infót.

Today tried to be out longer with Szandra but I had no chance to stay longer than an hour. Due to my heavy pollen allergy I cannot spend too much time in the field. That was the main reason why I posted anything since weeks. Finally we have checked a few ponds. As the weather has been extremely hot since some days the birds were rather quiet. On the unflooded lake more Pied Avocets formed a small breeding colony on a little mudflat. Although I did not see other Avocets incubating there could be about 7 breeding pairs nesting now on the lake. Other breeding shorebirds here include Little Ringed Plover, Northern Lapwing and Common Redshank. Shorebirds and other interesting species seen as follows: Eurasian Spoonbill 4 White Stork 2 Common Shelduck 1 Gadwal 6 Red-crested Pochard 4 Northern Lapwing 150 Pied Avocet 12 Black-winged Stilt 2 Little Ringed Plover 20 Common Redshank 12 Grey Plover 4 Ruff and Reeve 30 Wood Sandpiper 15 Common Sandpiper 1 Dunlin 8 Little Stint 5 Temmick's Stint 3 Ma megpróbáltam kicsit több időt tölteni kint Szandrával a Ferencmajorban, de nem volt esélyem többre, mint egy óra. Az allergiám okán nem tudok sok időt mostanában terepen tölteni. Ez volt a másik oka annak, hogy az utóbbi időben nem tettem semmi hírt a blogba. Végül azért sikerült néhány tavat körbejárni. A napok óta tartó 30 fok körüli kánikulában a madarak meglehetősen csendben voltak. A szárazon tartott 4-es tavon volt a legnagyobb mozgás, ahol a gulipánok újabb kisebb kolóniát hoztak létre egy kis iszapzátonyon. Bár a többi gulipánt nem láttam kotlani, ezekkel együtt 7 pár költ immár a tavon. Egyéb költő partimadár faj a tavon a bíbic, kis lile és a piroslábú cankó. A tavon látott egyéb érdekes fajok és a partimadarak mennyiségei: Kanalasgém 4 Fehér gólya 2 Bütykös ásólúd 1 Kendermagos réce 6 Üstökös réce 4 Gulipán 12 Gólyatöcs 2 Kis lile 20 Piroslábú cankó 12 Ezüstlile 4 Pajzsoscankó 30 Réti cankó 15 Billegetőcankó 1 Havasi partfutó 8 Apró partfutó 5 Temminck-partfutó 3

Black-winged Pratincole recorded

Today evening I got a rare bird alert about a record of a Black-winged Pratincole not so far from where I live, named Nagyigmánd. As recently usual I went out with my children, Szandra and Dani. This excellent bird was found by one of our local birder, Norbert Riezing. He was waiting for us at the scene as the distance and the accesibility of the site is quite good from Tata via the highway. The bird was among several Northern Lapwings on a wet part of a cornfield. Norbi, the founder, took several shots of the bird from a close distance. We could see it only in flight while calls were heard two times. Actually all the feature for a flying Black-winged Pratincole was recorded. Other birds seen nearby included: Northern Lapwing 8 Little Ringed Plover 2 Common Ringed Plover 4 Common Redshank 1 Dunlin 1 Thanks to Norbi for this cool species. •••••• Az esti órákban kaptam egy sms hírt, hogy feketeszárnyú székicsér van Nagyigmánd mellett. Mint mostanában szokássá vált a gyerekeimmel mentem megnézni ezt a ritkaságot. A madarat Riezing Norbert találta botanikai felmérés közben. A helyszínen megvárt minket, mivel viszonylag gyorsan oda tudtam érni a helyszínre. A madarat kis keresgélés után bíbicek között röpülve vettük észre egy belvizes folt felett. Norbi korábban már közelről fotózta a sétáló madarat. Röptében minden fontos bélyegét láthattuk. Röptében többször szólt is. Egyéb megfigyelt fajok a belvizeken: Bíbic 8 Kis lile 2 Parti lile 4 Piroslábú cankó 1 Havasi partfutó 1 Köszönjük Norbinak ezt a cool fajt!
